Authentic Mountain Summer: Take a Refreshing Dip

Few things offer a more authentic sense of a Norwegian summer than dipping your toes into a cool mountain lake after a long hike. Sun-warmed rocks, crisp air, and the signature silence of Nordseter—it is pure happiness in liquid form. Here in the mountains, swimming experiences await both adventurers and families, all within a short distance from Lillehammer Fjellstue.

Diversity at Nordseter

From high-altitude mountain tarns to the sandy shores of Lake Mjøsa—Lillehammer Fjellstue is perfectly situated for water-loving guests. You can start your day with a hike around Sjusjøen, cool off with a swim in Nevelvatnet, and end the evening with a dip down at Vingnesvika. This is the simple joy of summer—right outside your door.

Swimming at Nordseter and Sjusjøen

  • Nevelvatnet: Our closest favorite for a swim. The crystal-clear water is surrounded by smooth coastal rocks and small coves—perfect for a post-hike rest. Just a short stroll from the lodge, you’ll find the tranquility you’re looking for.

  • Sjusjøvannet: A family favorite. A universally designed hiking trail circles the lake, and the small shorelines offer plenty of space for picnic baskets and children’s play.

  • Kroksjøen: If you want to head a bit further into the mountains, you'll find Kroksjøen—a peaceful lake where you often have the whole place to yourself. Bring a thermos of coffee and let time stand still for a moment.

A Trip to the "Lillehammer Beach": Swimming in Mjøsa and Lågen

Just 20 minutes down from the mountain, you’ll find Vingnesvika—Lillehammer’s most popular swimming spot. With its sandy beach, green lawns, and diving board, it’s easy to spend the whole day here.

Just north of the city lie Jørstadmoen and Fåberg, where the Lågen river winds quietly through the landscape. Here you’ll find small sandbanks and calm pools—perfect for those seeking a more secluded swimming experience.

For the Little Ones (and the Grown-ups): Hunderfossen and Jorekstad

When the mountain water feels a bit too "refreshing," you can trade nature’s chill for heated fun.

  • Hunderfossen Fairytale Park: Features small pools and water activities that turn a summer day into an adventure for the whole family.

  • Jorekstad Leisure Pool: Offers both indoor and outdoor pools, the slides the kids love, and a sauna for those who want to warm up properly afterward.

Packing List and Tips for the Perfect Swim Day

  • In your bag: Towel, sunscreen, a packed lunch (prepared at the lodge, of course!), and plenty of fluids.

  • Leave no trace: Please respect nature—take your trash home and leave the swimming spot as clean as you found it.

  • Our best tip? Try an evening swim. When the mountains turn orange and the water surface lies perfectly still, it provides a conclusion to the day you won’t soon forget.

Adventures on the Water: Kayaking, Canoeing, and Fishing

  • For those who want to explore from the water’s surface, canoe and kayak rentals are available at both Sjusjøen and Nevelvatnet. From the waterline, you get a completely new perspective on the mountains—quiet paddle strokes, birdsong, and soft waves bring true peace of mind.

If you have a fishing rod in your luggage, there’s a good chance of a catch. Most lakes in the area offer both trout and arctic char (just remember to buy a fishing permit). For children, searching for small fish and insects along the water’s edge is always an adventure—small discoveries that make the day extra magical.
